Meknes & Volubilis Day Trip

We will pick you up at 9 AM from your hotel in Fes A nice drive through the fertile plains will take us to the Roman Ruins of Volubilis. Volubilis was built in a fertile agricultural plain, dating from 3rd century BC. Volubilis was a central administrative city for this part of Roman Africa, responsible for the grain producing in this fertile region, and exports to Rome. Volubilis was also administering contacts with the Berber tribes which the Romans never managed to suppress, but who only came as far as to cooperate with the Romans for mutual benefits. It was expended by the Roman in the 1st century AD to cover 100 acres and 1.6 miles because of growing olives that was behind the wealth of the Romans. The city was graced with so many fine buildings in the 2nd century, including Basilica, truimphal arch, temple and its superb mosaic floors, the house of Orpheus and its Dolphin mosaic. The house of the Wild Beast, the house of Flavius Germanus, the house of the Seasons…etc. The views of the Rif Mountain foothills are stunning. After an hour guided walking to explore these sights, we will continue our Meknes and Volubilis day trip towards Moulay Idris Zerhoun which is a beautiful village outlays over the Zerhoun hills. It is one of the holiest towns in Morocco. In August, pilgrims from all Morocco would come over. The Mausoleum can be seen from a distance with green tiles. Moulay Idris I is a venerated due to his religious background being the great grandson of the Prophet Mohammed. It’s believe that those who can’t afford visiting Meca in Saoudi Arabia, their visit to the Mausoleum Seven times equals the visit to Meca. The Mausoleum is no open to non-Muslims. Meknes is also divided into 2 parts. The old town was built by Moulay Ismail and the Ville Nouvelle by the French. Getting to Meknes, presrved by the UNESCO, will take us to Bab Mansour. The Mansour Gate is one of the most beautiful gates in Morocco. Visit the El Hdim Square and the nearby olive market. We will drive through the Royal Palace High Walls to El Hri Essaouani – The granary or storehouse as well as stables of over 12000 horses. The lagoon that supplied Meknes, Palaces and fields with water. We will leave back to Fes in the evening.
